Earthenware Steamer Narrative(甑子本解)
The shamanic myth“ Sirumal (Earthenware Steamer Narrative), ”belonging to the category of universe creation myths, is performed as part of the second segment in the Twelve-Segment Ritual (Yeoldugeorigut), transmitted in the Busan-dong neighborhood of Osan, Gyeonggi Province.
The following is a summary of a version of this myth recorded during the Japanese colonial period:
Dangchilseong, of Cheonhagung (Palace Under Heaven), descends to Jihagung (Palace Underground) chasing after fugitives on the run. He is looking for a place to spend the night when he comes across the house of Lady Maehwa (Plum Blossom), its lights on, in Maehwatteul (Plum Blossom Garden). Dangchilseong and Lady Maehwa spend the night together, during which Lady Maehwa has a series of dreams. Dangchilseong gives an interpretation that the dreams indicate that she will give birth to two sons, and after giving them names, leaves to return to Cheonhagung. Lady Maehwa indeed conceives and gives birth to two sons, their names Seonmun and Human. They enter a village academy to learn to read, but are teased by other children for being fatherless. Learning that their father is Dangchilseong of Cheonhagung, they ascend to the sky to meet him. Their father, upon confirming their names, bestows the kingdom of Daehanguk to Seonmun and the kingdom of Sohanguk to Humun.
“ Sirumal ”includes the mytheme of chaos, and of the arrangement of sun and moon, which are characteristic of creation myths, this myth being a type transmitted in the middle regions of the Korean peninsula.
