The legend of Ulsanbawi narrates the story of how Ulsan Rock came to be located on Mt. Seorak in Gangwon Province.
In the beginning of the universe, the creator made Mt. Geumgang and assembled to the mountain all the beautiful rocks from around the country.
Ulsan Rock, from Ulsan, faraway in the south, hurried on to be included, but by the time it reached Mt. Seorak, news arrived that Mt. Geumgang’s twelve thousand peaks had now been completed.
Disappointed, Lusan Rock stopped its journey and settled down in its current location.
This narrative is a local legend transmitted in specific areas around Ulsan Rock, including Sokcho and Yangyang, and also in some parts of Gyeongsang Province, around Ulsan, the original location of the rock, according to the tale.
The structure of the narrative is typical of legends about mountains that moved, comprising motifs of moving, stopping and conflict or competition. In some variations, Ulsan Rock is moved by a strongman, also a motif found in variations of the moving mountain legends.
